Test the microphone here first, then in Zoom
The test above answers one question: does your microphone reach an application on this machine at a usable level? That is worth establishing before you open Zoom, because if the answer is no, nothing inside Zoom will help and you will spend ten minutes in the wrong settings panel.
If the meter here moves and the playback is intelligible, your hardware, your driver and your operating system permissions are all fine. Any remaining problem is inside Zoom, and the sections below are in the order the causes actually occur.
Zoom's own microphone test

Open audio settings without joining a meeting
In the Zoom desktop client, click your profile picture, then Settings, then Audio. You do not need to be in a meeting, and testing here is better than testing in one — a meeting adds echo cancellation against the other participants' audio, which changes what you hear.

Run Test Speaker, then Test Mic
Test Speaker plays a tone; if you hear nothing, the problem is output, not input, and you have been debugging the wrong half. Test Mic records a few seconds and plays it back, which is the same principle as the playback in the tool above.

Read the Input Level bar while you speak
The bar should move well into its range on normal speech. A bar that barely twitches means low gain; a bar pinned at the far end means clipping. Both are fixed with the Input volume slider directly beneath it.

Turn off Automatically adjust microphone volume
This is on by default and it is the single most common cause of a Zoom microphone that fades in and out. Zoom rides your input gain up and down according to what it thinks is speech; on a quiet voice or in a noisy room it guesses wrong. Untick it and set the Input volume slider by hand while watching the level bar.

Join with computer audio, and check you are not muted twice
Zoom has a client mute, a hardware mute on many headsets, and — in webinars and large meetings — a host mute you cannot lift yourself. All three look identical from your side. The microphone icon in the meeting toolbar shows the client mute only.
The Zoom settings that quietly change how you sound

High removes fans and keyboards but also removes the quieter parts of a soft voice, which is why some people sound like they are cutting out. If your voice is quiet, set this to Low and raise your input level instead. |

Why Zoom shows a different level from the browser
It is common to see a healthy meter on a browser test and a nearly flat Input Level bar in Zoom, and it does not mean either one is broken.
The first reason is device selection. Zoom stores its own microphone choice and does not follow the browser or the operating system default. If you plugged in a headset after Zoom was already running, Zoom may still be on the built-in array. The Microphone dropdown at the top of Settings → Audio shows which one it holds; Same as System is the setting that follows your operating system, and it is not the default on every install.
The second is gain staging. Zoom applies its own gain on top of the operating system's input level. Turning the operating system's level to 100 per cent and letting Zoom's auto-adjust pull it back down produces a signal that pumps; setting the operating system's level so speech peaks around three-quarters and disabling Zoom's auto-adjust produces a steady one.
The third is exclusivity. On Windows, an application holding a device in exclusive mode blocks others. If a browser tab has your microphone open and Zoom starts afterwards, Zoom can end up with silence. Close the tab that ran the test before you join the meeting — including this one.
Zoom on a phone, a tablet and in the browser
The mobile Zoom application has far fewer audio controls than the desktop client, which is usually an advantage: there is no auto-adjust to fight and no gain slider to set wrong. What there is instead is an operating system permission that can be off, and on iOS a microphone that a different application is still holding.
On iOS, check Settings → Zoom → Microphone. If a call from another application ended badly, iOS occasionally leaves the audio session claimed; force-quitting both applications clears it. On Android, check Settings → Apps → Zoom → Permissions → Microphone.
Zoom's browser client — the version that runs when you join without installing anything — uses the browser's microphone permission, which means the test above tests exactly the same path. If the tool on this page works and the browser client does not, the browser has given the device to another tab.
One thing the mobile application does that the desktop one does not: it routes audio through the phone's call subsystem when you join by phone audio rather than internet audio. In that mode your microphone settings are irrelevant, because the audio is going over the cellular network, not over Zoom's.
When Zoom is not the right tool for the call
Zoom reaches people who have Zoom. It cannot reach a landline, and its dial-out to ordinary phone numbers requires a paid Zoom Phone or audio-conferencing add-on with per-minute charges of its own.
If what you need is to call an actual telephone number — a parent's landline, a clinic, a bank in another country — a conferencing application is the wrong shape of tool, and the audio settings above do not apply. Telvio places calls to ordinary landline and mobile numbers over your internet connection, bills per second rather than per minute, and needs no account on either side. The person you are calling needs nothing at all.
The microphone advice transfers unchanged. The same headset, the same distance and the same input level that make you clear on Zoom make you clear on a phone call — with the caveat that the telephone network carries a narrower band of frequencies, so articulation matters more.
