How to Make WhatsApp Calls on Your Computer
WhatsApp lets you call contacts on your phone from a computer. Whether you need a quick voice call or a video chat with a small group, this guide explains what you need, how to place calls from your PC, how to set up group calls, how to fix common connection problems, and other ways to call from a computer if WhatsApp isn’t the right fit.
WhatsApp Web Call Requirements
Before you try a WhatsApp call on computer, make sure your setup meets these requirements:
- WhatsApp account on a mobile device. You must already have WhatsApp active on your phone and registered to your phone number.
- Linked device. Use WhatsApp Desktop (Windows or macOS) or web.whatsapp.com and connect it to your phone using Settings > Linked devices in the mobile app. For the most reliable calling experience, use the official WhatsApp Desktop app.
- Latest software. Install the most recent WhatsApp Desktop release or use an up-to-date browser (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox) for web.whatsapp.com. Also update WhatsApp on your phone.
- Supported operating system:
- Windows 10 or later (Desktop app).
- macOS 10.13 or later (Desktop app).
- Modern browsers for web.whatsapp.com (Chrome, Edge, Firefox). If your browser blocks microphone/camera features, switch to Chrome or Edge.
- Microphone and speakers/headphones. Built-in audio devices work, but a USB/Bluetooth headset usually improves clarity.
- Camera for video calls. If you want video, your PC needs a camera and you must grant camera permission.
- Network and bandwidth. A stable broadband or mobile data connection is necessary. WhatsApp voice calls use modest bandwidth; video calls need more (roughly 0.5–1.5 Mbps upload/download per person, depending on resolution).
- Permissions: Allow the app or browser to use your microphone and camera. On Windows and macOS you may also need to enable mic/camera access in system privacy settings.
- Multi-device readiness (optional). If you use WhatsApp’s multi-device feature, you can make desktop calls even when your phone is offline. If you haven’t enabled multi-device, the phone must be online and connected to the internet.
If any requirement is missing, you may not see call icons in the desktop app or web client. When in doubt, use the Desktop app for the fullest feature set.
Step-by-Step PC Calling Process
Here’s a clear process to make a WhatsApp call on PC, with choices for both voice and video.
Link your device
- Open WhatsApp on your phone.
- Tap Settings (iPhone) or the three dots menu (Android) and choose Linked devices.
- Tap Link a device and scan the QR code shown at web.whatsapp.com or in the WhatsApp Desktop app.
Choose Desktop vs Web
- Desktop app: Download WhatsApp Desktop from whatsapp.com/download. The Desktop app typically offers the best audio/video performance.
- Web: In a supported browser, go to web.whatsapp.com and link your phone. Web works but browser permissions can sometimes be restrictive.
Open a chat
- In the left column, select the individual or group chat you want to call.
Start a voice or video call
- For an individual: Click the phone icon to start a voice call, or the camera icon to start a video call. Those icons appear in the top-right corner of the chat window.
- For people who don’t show icons: If the call icons don’t appear, the contact may not be using a version of WhatsApp that supports desktop calling, or you may be using an unsupported browser. Try the Desktop app instead.
Grant permissions
- The first time you call from your browser or desktop app, the system will ask for microphone (and camera for video) access. Allow these permissions.
- If you declined earlier, go to your browser or system settings to re-enable mic/camera access.
In-call controls
- Mute/unmute microphone, enable/disable camera, switch speaker outputs, and add participants (desktop app supports adding people during a call).
- Use a headset for better audio and to avoid echo.
End the call
- Click the red hang-up button when done.
Example: Making a voice call to a friend
- Open WhatsApp Desktop, select the friend’s chat, click the phone icon, allow microphone access, and talk. If audio is soft, switch to a headset via the audio settings icon in the call.
Note: If you need to place WhatsApp phone calls on PC to dial a regular landline or mobile number, WhatsApp doesn’t support PSTN (public phone network) dialing. It only connects to other WhatsApp users. For calling real phone numbers from a computer, consider a VoIP service — see the Alternative PC Calling Methods section below.
Group Call Setup on Computer
You can place or join group calls from your PC. WhatsApp supports group voice and video calls with multiple participants (WhatsApp’s participant limit has increased over time; check the app for the current limit).
Two ways to start a group call:
A. From a group chat
- Open the group chat on WhatsApp Desktop.
- Click the phone icon. WhatsApp will show participants you can include; select members and start the call. If the call icon isn’t visible in the group chat, update the Desktop app or use the mobile app to start the call and then add participants from your PC.
B. By adding participants during a call
- Start a one-on-one call with a contact.
- In the call window, click the “add participant” icon (person with a +) and select more contacts. Repeat until you have the group you want.
Joining a group call
- When someone starts a group call, you’ll see a ringing notification in the group chat or in the Calls tab on Desktop/web.
- Click Join to enter the call. If the call has already started, Join will let you enter late.
Tips for smooth group calls
- Ask participants to use headsets to reduce echo.
- Encourage turning off video if bandwidth is limited.
- If you lead the call, mute participants with background noise when necessary.
- Close bandwidth-heavy apps (file uploads, streaming) to keep voice quality stable.
- If a participant’s audio/video drops, have them rejoin rather than stay in a poor-quality connection.
If you frequently host larger meetings, consider dedicated meeting platforms covered in our guide to free online video calling platforms for more features and participant controls.
Troubleshooting Common Connection Issues
If you can’t make or receive a WhatsApp call from computer, try these targeted fixes.
Problem: No call button on web.whatsapp.com
- Cause: Browser or WhatsApp version limitation.
- Fix: Install WhatsApp Desktop. If you prefer web, switch to Chrome or Edge and update both browser and mobile app. Link the device again.
Problem: Microphone or camera not detected
- Cause: Permissions blocked or system privacy settings.
- Fix:
- In browser: click the lock icon near the address bar and allow mic/camera for web.whatsapp.com.
- In Windows: Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone/Camera and allow apps to access.
- In macOS: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone/Camera and enable the app.
- Test the mic in another app to isolate OS vs app-level issues.
Problem: Poor audio or dropped calls
- Cause: Weak or congested network, firewall or router blocking traffic.
- Fix:
- Move to a stronger WiFi or wired connection.
- Close background apps that use bandwidth (cloud backups, streaming).
- If on corporate network, check with IT — some firewalls block VoIP ports. Switching to a different network or using a mobile hotspot often resolves the issue.
- Restart the desktop app and your router.
Problem: Echo or feedback during calls
- Cause: Multiple active microphones/speakers or speakerphone without headset.
- Fix: Use headphones or mute the computer speakers. Reduce speaker volume or move away from the microphone.
Problem: Call quality is poor for only one participant
- Cause: That participant’s device or network.
- Fix: Ask them to switch to a headset, close background apps, or rejoin the call from their mobile WhatsApp (which might have a better network path).
Problem: Notifications not showing for incoming calls
- Cause: Do Not Disturb or notification permissions disabled.
- Fix:
- Ensure system notifications are allowed for WhatsApp Desktop.
- Check browser notification permissions if using web.whatsapp.com.
- Turn off Focus/Do Not Disturb mode.
If the desktop app still fails, unlink and relink your device:
- On your phone: Settings > Linked devices > log out of the desktop session and then link again. This often resolves session or authentication problems.
Alternative PC Calling Methods
If WhatsApp calling on computer doesn’t meet your needs (for example, you need to call a regular phone number or prefer a service dedicated to calling), consider these alternatives.
WhatsApp on an Android emulator
- Run WhatsApp mobile inside BlueStacks or another Android emulator to use the mobile interface on PC. Emulators can access a mic and camera and simulate a mobile device, but they may be slower and less reliable than the official Desktop app.
Dedicated video/voice platforms
- Use platforms designed for meetings and computer calling (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet). Those services often handle larger groups, offer recording, transcription, and administrative controls. See our guide to free online video calling platforms for a side-by-side view.
VoIP services that call phone numbers
- If you need to call landlines or mobiles from your computer, a VoIP provider connects you to the public phone network. VoIP apps let you dial any phone number from a PC and are usually cheaper than international mobile rates. Read about VoIP basics in our guide to voip phone services explained and how to make international calls for rate comparisons.
Virtual phone numbers
- If you want a local presence in another country or a dedicated business line on your PC, virtual phone numbers forward calls to your device. Learn more in our virtual phone numbers guide and free virtual phone numbers guide.
Telvio (mobile VoIP option)
- If you want to call international phone numbers without using cellular minutes, Telvio offers a mobile VoIP app that calls real phone numbers in 200+ countries over WiFi or mobile data. Telvio sells credit packs (Starter $1.99, Standard $4.99, Pro $9.99), charges per second with no connection fees, credits never expire, and provides 1 free minute on first install. Use Telvio when the person you need to reach doesn’t use WhatsApp or when you need affordable PSTN dialing from a mobile device.
Choosing the right method
- Use WhatsApp on PC when both parties use WhatsApp and you want quick voice/video chat.
- Use VoIP or Telvio when you must dial a regular phone number, need predictable international rates, or want per-second billing.
- Use meeting platforms for large, feature-rich calls.
