The free minute did not work

The trial minute has a small number of rules and each one produces a different-looking failure. Here is what it is, what it is not, and which rule you have probably hit.

  • One per install
  • Served destinations only
  • Consumed on connection

What the free minute is

It is one free minute of calling, offered once so you can hear the call quality before spending anything. No card, no registration and no account are required to use it. It applies to the destinations Telvio serves, it is consumed by the first call that connects, and it is one per installation rather than one per call.

The three things that usually explain it not working: the destination is not one we serve, so no call was placed at all; the minute was already used on an earlier call from the same device; or the call never connected, in which case nothing was consumed and the minute is still there.

Check these in order

  1. 1

Confirm the destination is one we serve

The free minute cannot create a route that does not exist. If the country or the specific number range is not one of the 41 destinations we serve, the app declines before dialling and the minute is untouched. What that looks like is a separate page, and the rates page is the full list.

  2. 2

Check whether the call actually connected

The minute is consumed by connected time, so a call that failed, was refused, or rang without being answered does not use it. If you tried three times and none connected, you still have the minute. Ringing costs nothing, here as everywhere else in the app.

  3. 3

Remember whether the app has been installed before

The offer is one per installation. Deleting and reinstalling does not reset it, and neither does a new phone signed into the same store account. This is not a bug — an offer that resets on reinstall is an offer that costs the same as no offer at all.

  4. 4

Check whether the balance moved at all

If the balance went down by the price of the full call, the minute was already used. If it went down by the price of the call minus a minute, the minute applied and the call was simply longer than a minute. The second case looks like a failure and is the offer working.

What the free minute is not

  • Not a free minute per call. One in total, once, so you can test the service before paying for it.
  • Not a free minute anywhere. It applies to destinations that have a route. Where there is no route there is no call to make free.
  • Not renewable by reinstalling. The entitlement is not stored in the app's local data, so removing the app does not remove it.
  • Not a subscription trial. There is nothing to cancel, nothing that starts charging afterwards, and no payment method taken up front. Telvio has no subscription at all.
  • Not a reason to give us anything. No card, no email, no phone number and no account. If something asks you for those to unlock a free minute in Telvio, it is not Telvio.

Calls longer than a minute

The minute covers the first sixty seconds of connected time and the call continues afterwards, billed per second from your credit. With no credit, the call ends when the free minute is exhausted rather than continuing into a negative balance — which is the behaviour most people want, and it is worth knowing so the ending does not read as a dropped call.

Because billing is per second, a trial call of forty seconds uses forty seconds and leaves twenty. There is no rounding that swallows the remainder, and no expiry on what is left of it.

If the call ended at almost exactly a minute and you did have credit, that is not the trial running out — a call that ends near a round number repeatedly is usually a timer somewhere else, and dropped calls covers what those are.

Why the offer is shaped this way

A free minute is a demonstration rather than a promotion, and its job is narrow: to let you hear what a call actually sounds like to the number you care about, before any money changes hands. Call quality to one destination tells you very little about another, so the only useful test is the one you make yourself, to the person you actually call.

That is also why it needs no registration. Asking for an email address to unlock a trial converts a test into a transaction and gives us a list we do not want to hold; the app works without an account at all, which is one of the few genuinely unusual things about it — why Telvio works this way sets out the rest.

One per installation is the cost of it being unconditional. An offer with no identity attached has to be limited by something, and the installation is the least invasive thing available to limit it by.

What the free minute is actually testing

It is worth using it deliberately rather than spending it on the first number to hand, because the thing it can tell you is narrow and the thing people assume it tells them is broad.

Call quality on an internet call is decided by the whole path: your connection, the route between our carrier and the destination country, and the network that finally delivers the call. None of that generalises. A flawless call to a landline in Germany tells you almost nothing about a mobile in Nigeria, because the two share only the first leg. So spend the minute on the number you actually intend to call, from the connection you will usually be on. That is the only test that answers the question you have.

It is also worth calling at a realistic hour. Congestion is real and it has a daily shape at both ends: a call at three in the morning local time is the easiest possible test and the least representative one. If you normally call in the evening, test in the evening.

What the minute cannot test is the price, because it is free. Check the rate the app shows before dialling against the published rates, and if the destination is one you will call often, work the cost out for a month rather than for a call — the arithmetic is short and it is the number that actually matters.

Bottom line

One free minute per installation, no card and no account, applying to the destinations we serve and consumed by connected time.

It does not reset on reinstall, does not apply where there is no route, and is untouched by a call that never connected.

A call longer than a minute continues on your credit, or ends at the minute if you have none. Per-second billing means an unused part of the minute stays unused.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Telvio free minute work?

One free minute of calling per installation, with no card, no account and no registration. It applies to the destinations Telvio serves and is consumed by connected time, so a call that never connects does not use it.

Why did my free minute not apply?

The usual reasons are that the destination is not one we serve, so no call was placed; that the minute was already used on an earlier call from the same device; or that the call did not connect, in which case it is still available.

Can I get the free minute again by reinstalling the app?

No. The entitlement is one per installation and is not held in the app's local data, so deleting and reinstalling does not reset it, and neither does a new device on the same store account.

Do I need a card to use the free minute?

No. No payment method, no email address, no phone number and no account are required. Anything asking for those to unlock a free minute is not part of this app.

What happens when the free minute runs out mid-call?

The call continues, billed per second from your credit. If you have no credit the call ends at that point rather than continuing into a negative balance.

Is the free minute a subscription trial?

No. There is nothing to cancel and nothing that begins charging afterwards, because the app has no subscription at all. Credit is bought in one-off packs and consumed per second.

What should I use the free minute on?

The number you actually intend to call, from the connection you will usually be on, at a realistic time of day. Call quality does not generalise between destinations, so a clean test call to one country tells you very little about another.

Does the free minute cover any destination?

It applies to the destinations the service can route to. Where there is no route the call is declined before dialling and the minute is untouched, because there is no call to make free.
