Someone called you from (434) 280-0044

One number carries every outgoing call the app places, worldwide. That is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly, because it explains the thing that puzzles most people who land here: the number is American and geographic, and the person who called you is very probably neither in Virginia nor in the United States at all.

When a call travels over the internet before it reaches the telephone network, the network still has to be told what number to display. An app cannot show the caller's own mobile number — it has no way to prove it owns that number, and pretending to own a number you do not is precisely what caller ID spoofing means. So the app displays a number it does hold, and the same one every time.

That number is a leased line on a carrier's numbering range, and numbering ranges are geographic by accident of history rather than by anything about the call. A person calling their mother in Manila from a kitchen in Dubai, using an app whose carrier issued it a Virginia number, produces a call that reaches Manila displaying (434) 280-0044. Nothing in that chain went wrong. The geography of the number describes where the number was issued, not where the caller sits, not where the company is, and not where the call started.

This is the ordinary behaviour of every calling app that reaches real telephone numbers — Skype, Viber Out, Rebtel, Google Voice and the rest all do a version of it. What differs between them is how honest they are about which number they use. We publish ours, on this page, with the company that holds it named on it.

This is the single most useful sentence on the page, so it gets its own section. The number is configured for outgoing calls only. There is no phone, no desk and no queue behind it: a call to it does not reach the person who rang you, does not reach Telvio support, and does not reach anyone who can tell you who was calling. Please do not spend money dialling it, especially from outside the United States where a call to a US number is not free.

The reason is structural rather than a setting somebody forgot. Telvio places outgoing calls and does not assign anybody a phone number, which is also why the app cannot receive calls or text messages. There is no inbox for this number to deliver into.

It is a fair question and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. Telvio is a consumer app that anyone can install, so a call that displays this number was placed by a member of the public, and we cannot tell you in advance that any individual call was made in good faith. What we can tell you is what the service is, what it is not, and what happens when somebody misuses it.

Telvio sells prepaid credit for outgoing calls. It has no marketing arm that calls people, no sales team, no debt collection service and no automated dialler available to anybody. We never call you. The company does not place calls at all — only users of the app do — so a call claiming to be from Telvio itself, from Telvio billing, or from Telvio security is not from us. All of our contact with users is by email, from an address on this domain.

The pattern to be careful about is the one that is careful about you: a caller who creates urgency and then asks you to move money, read out a code from an SMS, install remote-access software, or confirm card details. No bank, tax authority, courier or software company asks for any of those on an unsolicited call, whatever number is on your screen and whatever the caller says it means. Ending the call and dialling the organisation on a number you looked up yourself costs nothing and defeats the entire category.

Using Telvio for any of that breaks our acceptable use policy, and the enforcement is not decorative: bulk and automated calling is prohibited, and an account reported for fraud is suspended and its credit frozen. Because every call is billed per second against prepaid credit, an account has to be funded before it can dial anything, which makes this an inconvenient tool for the volume calling that most telephone fraud depends on.

A report we can act on takes about a minute to write. We do not need a recording, a screenshot or your account details, and you do not need to be a Telvio user — most people who report a call have never heard of us until the call arrived.

Everyone you ring sees (434) 280-0044 rather than your own number, and they cannot ring you back on it. That surprises people, and the surprise is usually worse than the inconvenience: a relative who does not answer unknown numbers will not answer yours.

The fix is thirty seconds of work and it is worth doing before the first call. Message the people you call regularly, tell them the number you will show up as, and ask them to save it under your name. Once it is in their address book, your calls arrive with your name on them, and everything that follows behaves normally.

The number cannot be changed to your own, and no app of this kind can honestly offer that. Displaying a number means asserting to the telephone network that you are entitled to use it, and the verification frameworks that carriers now enforce in the United States and elsewhere exist specifically to stop that assertion being made casually. An app that offers to show your own mobile number without verifying that you hold it is telling you something about how it treats the rest of its obligations.

Not every call shows (434) 280-0044 on the other end. Calling line identity is passed from carrier to carrier, and any carrier on the route may replace it, shorten it or drop it — a practice that is common on international routes and entirely outside the control of whoever placed the call. Depending on the operator that finally delivers the call, the person you ring may see this number, a different number, a truncated version of it, or no number at all.

So the absence of 434-280-0044 on a call you were expecting does not mean the call came from somewhere else, and its presence is not a guarantee about anything except which service carried the call. If you are trying to work out whether a call you received was genuine, the number displayed is weak evidence in either direction. What the caller asks you to do is strong evidence, and it is the evidence to act on.

If you would rather not see the number again, your phone can do this without an app and without our involvement. Blocking is local to your handset: it stops the call reaching you and does nothing on our side, so a call worth reporting should be reported before you block it.
