Your call drops part-way through

A call that rings, connects and then dies has a short list of causes, and the length of time before it dies tells you which one you have.

The short answer

Time the drop. A call that dies at almost exactly the same point every time — 30 seconds, a minute, two minutes — is being cut by something with a timer: a router dropping an idle connection, a power-saving mode suspending the app, or a network policy. A call that dies at random points is a connection problem, usually a WiFi handover or a weak signal.

The single most effective fix for both is to make the call on mobile data with WiFi switched off. If the drops stop, the fault is the WiFi network, and you have narrowed it from everything to one thing.

Fixes, roughly in order of how often they work

    Turn WiFi off and call on mobile data

    Not because mobile data is better, but because it is a different network, and a comparison is worth more than a guess. A call is bound to the connection it started on and does not survive a switch between the two, so a phone that is drifting in and out of WiFi range will drop calls that mobile data alone would have carried.

    Keep the app in the foreground and the screen awake for one test call

    Aggressive battery optimisation suspends background apps, and a suspended app cannot keep a call alive. This is much more common on Android, where manufacturers layer their own power management on top of the system's, and it produces the characteristic symptom: calls die around the same number of seconds after the screen goes dark. If holding the screen awake fixes it, exempt Telvio from battery optimisation and the fix becomes permanent.

    Move closer to the router, or use the 5 GHz band

    Voice tolerates low bandwidth and does not tolerate jitter. At the edge of WiFi range, the connection stays nominally alive while packet timing falls apart, which browsing hides and a call cannot. If your router publishes separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names, the 5 GHz one is usually far cleaner over a short distance.

    Restart the router if every call on that network drops

    Consumer routers hold a table of active connections and misbehave when it fills, which shows up as long-running connections dying while new ones work. A restart clears it. If drops return within days on the same router, its firmware or its connection-tracking limit is the problem, and that is worth raising with whoever supplied it.

    Check whether the same thing happens on other calling apps

    If every voice app on that network drops calls at a similar point, the network is filtering or timing out voice traffic and no setting inside one app will fix it. That is common on corporate, university and hotel networks, and in a few countries it is national policy.

What the timing tells you

Drops that cluster around a consistent duration are being caused by something counting. The most frequent culprit is a router's connection-tracking timeout: the router keeps a record of each open connection and discards records it considers idle, and because voice packets are small and steady rather than bursty, some routers misjudge an active call as idle. The tell is that the call dies quietly, with no error and no warning, always at about the same point.

Power management is the other timed cause and it is the one to suspect on Android. Every major manufacturer runs its own battery optimisation on top of the operating system's, and the more aggressive implementations suspend an app shortly after the screen turns off regardless of what the app is doing. A call that survives while you look at the screen and dies about thirty seconds after you put the phone to your ear and the display sleeps is this, almost every time.

Random drops, by contrast, are the network. Every WiFi network loses packets; the question is how many and in what pattern. A short burst of loss produces a gap in the audio and the call recovers. A longer one — a handover between access points, a microwave oven, a neighbour's network on the same channel — exceeds what the call can ride out and it ends. Mobile networks do the same thing during a handover between cells, which is why calls made while moving through a city drop more than calls made sitting still.

The things that are not causing it

It is worth ruling out the explanations people reach for first, because time spent on them is time not spent on the cause.

Your balance is not cutting the call. Telvio bills per second from prepaid credit, and a call that would exhaust the balance ends with the balance at zero — which means the drop happens at a predictable cost, not a predictable time, and the app shows the remaining time before you dial. If you suspect billing, what a call actually costs shows the arithmetic.

There is no call-length limit. Some services cap a call at an hour or cut a free trial call at a fixed point; Telvio does not, so a two-minute drop is not a policy.

The person you called is very rarely the cause. If they are on a mobile in a weak signal area their end can certainly fail, but the giveaway is that it happens with everyone you call rather than with one person. Drops confined to one recipient point at their network, not yours.

If it is the network you cannot change

Office, campus and hotel networks are often configured by people whose priority is not your call, and there is a limit to what you can do from the handset. Two things are worth trying before giving up on the network.

Mobile data almost always works where restrictive WiFi does not, because the mobile network carries the traffic to its own core before it reaches the internet and there is no local firewall in the path. A minute of voice costs very little data — the figures are on the connection page — so this is a cheaper answer than it sounds.

Where WiFi is your only option and it filters voice, ask whoever runs it whether VoIP is permitted. On a corporate network the answer is often that it is allowed but needs a rule; on a hotel network there is sometimes a premium tier that does not filter. Neither is satisfying, but both are faster than reconfiguring a phone that is working correctly.

What to send us if it keeps happening

  • How long the call lasted before it dropped, and whether that number is consistent across several calls. This is the single most useful thing in the report.
  • Whether it happens on both WiFi and mobile data, and whether it happens on more than one WiFi network.
  • Whether it happens with every destination or only with one number or one country.
  • Your phone model and operating system version, plus whether the screen was on or off when the call dropped.
  • The date, the time and your time zone for two or three of the dropped calls, so we can look at the same calls you are describing.

Bottom line

Time the drops. A consistent duration means something with a timer is ending the call — a router's idle timeout or your phone's battery optimisation. A random duration means the connection is losing packets, and WiFi is the usual reason.

Test on mobile data with WiFi off. It separates the two halves of the problem faster than any other single step, and on a restrictive WiFi network it is also the fix.

Your balance does not cut calls short and there is no maximum call length, so neither is worth investigating.

Does a dropped call still cost money?

You are billed per second for the seconds that connected, so a call that dropped after forty seconds costs forty seconds. There is no connection fee and no minimum charge, so a dropped call does not cost a full minute.
