Your call will not connect
A call that ends before you hear a ringing tone has failed at one of four points, and they are quick to tell apart. Start at the top — the first two account for most of it.
- Four checks, in order
- No account needed to get help
- Written for the app, useful for any VoIP call
Start here
Check the number first. It has to be in full international form — a plus sign, the country code, then the number with any leading trunk zero removed. 020 7946 0958 in London is +44 20 7946 0958, not +44 020 7946 0958. This single mistake causes more failed international calls than everything else put together.
If the number is right, the order to work through is: does Telvio serve that destination, do you have credit, and is your connection carrying data properly. Each has a distinct symptom, described below.
Work through these four in order
- 1
Rewrite the number in international form
Start with + and the country code, then the national number with the trunk prefix removed. Most countries put a 0 in front of a number dialled locally and it is not part of the number: drop it. If you copied the number from a local website or a local contact card it will have no country code at all, and it will look complete while being unusable from anywhere else. Our phone number validator checks the shape of a number in the browser and tells you which country it belongs to.
- 2
Check the destination is one we can call
Telvio can currently place calls to 41 destinations, and the app shows the price before it dials. If the destination is not one of them the call stops there rather than connecting to something expensive — see when a destination is not available for what that looks like and what to do. The rates page lists every destination we serve, with the price.
- 3
Check your credit covers a minute
Calls are paid from prepaid credit at a per-second rate, and the app will not start a call it cannot bill for. If your balance is very small, a call to an expensive destination can fail while a call to a cheap one succeeds — which looks like a broken app and is arithmetic. If you have just topped up and the balance has not moved, credit that did not arrive covers that separately.
- 4
Test the connection with something other than a browser
A WiFi network that loads web pages can still be unusable for calls. Captive portals in hotels, cafés and airports, and networks that block the ports voice traffic uses, will pass ordinary browsing and drop a call at setup. The quickest test is to switch to mobile data and dial again. If it connects on mobile data, the problem is that WiFi network, not the app.
What is actually happening when a call does not connect
A call over the internet is built in three stages and can fail at any of them, which is why the symptoms differ so much. First your phone reaches our servers and says who it wants to call. Second, our carrier hands the call to the telephone network in the destination country. Third, the operator on the other end rings a handset. Only the third stage produces a ringing tone in your ear, so if you hear nothing at all, the call did not get that far.
That distinction is the fastest diagnostic you have. An immediate failure with an error message is stage one or two: the app knows the call was refused and tells you why. A long silence and then nothing is usually the network — the request left your phone and no answer came back. A ringing tone that stops means the call reached the destination and something there ended it, which is a different problem and is covered in calls that drop.
It is worth knowing that Telvio places outgoing calls only and never receives them. There is no incoming leg to misconfigure, no number assigned to you, and nothing on your account that can be in the wrong state for receiving. That removes a whole class of problems that affect apps which give you a phone number, and it also means the fault, when there is one, is on the outgoing path.
The number is right and it still fails
Some numbers cannot be reached from an internet calling service at all, and no amount of retrying changes it. Premium-rate and shared-cost numbers — the ranges billed at a special tariff — are blocked, because the tariff is set by the number's owner and can be arbitrarily high. Short codes, service numbers and three- or four-digit national numbers only exist inside their own country's network and have no international form to dial.
Emergency numbers are the important case. Telvio cannot call emergency services. This is not a limitation we intend to remove; an internet call carries no verified location, so an emergency operator would not know where to send help. Use your phone's own dialler, which reaches emergency services even with no credit, no SIM in some countries, and no working data connection. Our emergency calls page explains this in full, and it is worth two minutes of your time before you need it.
Numbers behind a corporate switchboard sometimes need more than the number. If a system answers and then requires an extension, dial the main number first and enter the extension with the in-call keypad once you are connected — an extension appended to the number itself with a comma or a hash is a convention some phones understand and no network does.
When it is the connection
Voice needs very little bandwidth and is very fussy about consistency. A call uses in the region of 30 to 50 kilobits per second in each direction, which any connection made in the last fifteen years can supply; what it also needs is for those small packets to arrive steadily, and that is what public networks are worst at. A connection can measure well on a speed test and still be useless for calls, because a speed test measures how much arrives and voice cares about when.
Three specific situations account for most connection failures. Captive portals — the login page a hotel or café network shows — block everything except that page until you accept the terms, and an app trying to place a call during that window fails silently. Open the browser, load any site, complete the login, then dial. Restrictive networks at offices, universities and some hotels block the ports voice traffic uses while permitting web browsing. Networks that limit VoIP by policy exist in a number of countries, and there the block is deliberate and applies to every calling app, not just this one.
Switching between WiFi and mobile data mid-call also drops it: the call is bound to the connection it started on. If you are walking out of range of a WiFi network, turn WiFi off before you dial and let the call use mobile data all the way through. Which connection to use covers the trade-off, including how much data a call actually costs.
If none of that worked
Write to [email protected]. A message with these four things in it can usually be answered on the first reply rather than after three rounds of questions.
- The number you dialled, in full international form. Change the last two digits if you would rather not send it in full — the country and the length are what we need.
- The date, the time and your time zone. This is what locates the specific attempt in the logs.
- Exactly what happened, and how long it took: an instant error, a few seconds of silence, a ringing tone that stopped. Each points somewhere different.
- Your device and connection. Phone model, operating system version, and whether you were on WiFi or mobile data — and whether the other one behaves differently.
Bottom line
Most calls that will not connect fail on the number's format. Write it as a plus sign, the country code, and the national number with the leading zero removed, and dial again.
If the format is right, check in this order: whether the destination is one of the 41 we serve, whether your credit covers a minute, and whether the network you are on actually passes voice traffic — mobile data is the fastest way to rule the last one out.
Emergency numbers are the exception that no troubleshooting fixes. Telvio cannot reach them, by design; use your phone's own dialler.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Telvio call fail immediately without ringing?
An immediate failure means the call was refused before it reached the destination network, which is almost always the number's format, a destination we do not serve, or insufficient credit. A call that fails after a long silence is usually the network you are connected to.
How should I write an international number in Telvio?
Start with a plus sign, then the country code, then the national number with any leading trunk zero removed. A London number written locally as 020 7946 0958 is +44 20 7946 0958 internationally. Leaving the trunk zero in is the most common cause of a failed international call.
Can Telvio call emergency services?
No. Telvio cannot reach emergency numbers, and this is deliberate: an internet call carries no verified location, so an emergency operator could not be told where to send help. Use your phone's built-in dialler, which reaches emergency services even without credit or a data connection.
Why do calls work on mobile data but not on WiFi?
That points at the WiFi network rather than the app. Captive portals, blocked ports and networks that restrict voice traffic all pass ordinary web browsing while dropping a call at setup. Complete any login page first, and if the network still refuses, use mobile data.
Can a call fail because my balance is low?
Yes. The app will not start a call it cannot bill, so a small balance can fail on an expensive destination while still working on a cheap one. Check the price the app shows before dialling against what is left on your balance.
Does Telvio work with extensions and phone menus?
Yes, but enter the extension after the call connects, using the in-call keypad. An extension appended to the number itself with a comma or a hash is a phone convention rather than something the telephone network understands.
