Aggregate page statistics, which tell us which pages people actually read, and anonymised recordings of how a page was used — where a reader scrolled, what they clicked, where they gave up. On a site of this size, in thirty languages, that is the only realistic way to discover that a page is broken or confusing in a language nobody on the team reads. It records interaction with pages, not identity. There is no name, no email address and no account here to attach anything to, because this website has no login of any kind. Clarity masks text input by default, and there are no forms on this site to type anything into in the first place. It is also, candidly, a search signal: Bing Webmaster Tools reads engagement data from Clarity, and this site is built to be found through Bing because that is the index most AI assistants search. That is a real reason and it would be dishonest to leave it out of a page about why the tool is here. ## Turning it off The switch above this section stops Clarity loading on this site in this browser. This page is only about this website. ## What a cookie is, and what this one is not A cookie is a small piece of text a website asks your browser to keep and hand back on the next request. That is the whole mechanism. It has no access to your files, cannot read anything else on your computer, and cannot do anything a website could not do without it — what it adds is memory between one page and the next. The reason cookies acquired their reputation is not the mechanism but one particular use of it. A cookie set by a third party present on thousands of different websites lets that third party recognise the same browser across all of them, which turns a memory aid into a record of where somebody has been. That is what tracking means, and it is the practice regulation was written for. On a site of 24 000 pages in thirty languages, this is the only realistic way to find out that a page is broken in a language nobody on the team reads. - **Device and browser characteristics** — screen size, browser, operating system, and an approximate location derived from the IP address, which means a city or a country rather than an address. - **Not what you type.** Clarity masks text input by default, and this site has no forms to type into: no login, no sign-up, no search that reaches a server, no comments. - **Not who you are.** There is no account on this website, so there is nothing for a session to be attached to.
